Green Calculators and Software

August 30th, 2007

I had a conversation with a few friends about our carbon foot prints.
Through a google search I pulled up www.infinitepower.org

This is a Texas based site with a lot of excellent information. Check out the calculators and software page. This site has five different online calculators and links to all kinds of software. I filled in the Carbon Pollution Calculator and up with an end result of needing to plant 619 trees to cover all the carbon I produced.

As a graphic designer for print my clients use a lot of paper and when you throw in all the paper that comes into my office over a year I would guess I would need to replace 20 to 40 trees . Bottom line is I only use 5 gallons of gas per week. So that side of my carbon usage is low. However I can reduce my paper intake and help clients with their print marketing. Looking at long term business marketing, print marketing need to move to on-demand or online interactive.

Also check out www.carbonfootprint.com

This site is interesting too. Besides the calculator they also have a reduce your carbon footprint page and a Off-set your carbon footprint page.

Water for Fuel

August 27th, 2007

When we first started two figure out how to fly there were hundreds of inverter all over the world developing planes. Once the basic details were figured out
it took only 40 years to come up with the jumbo jet

The same sort of inventor community is working on new fuel source which is water. Since is was a kid back in the 60’s inventors were tinkering with ways to use the hydrogen part of water as a fuel source. Until the few weeks I did realize how easy it was to separate out the hydrogen. Denny Klein is one of those inventors had a start out selling a hydrogen on demand welding unit.
And with in the year will have kit to out fix cars with a hydrogen on demand fuel systems. Check it out.

Your Local Library is a great Green Resource.

February 17th, 2007

As I check out green resource books, the first thing I do is log in to my local library site to see if they have the book in their collection. Here in Bellevue the King County library is excellent. www.KCLS.org

In this case the book I was looking for “Green Remodeling” was in the King county collection. I logged in and placed this book on hold. A few days later the library sent me email saying the book was in the pick up area. It’s a great system!

Green Remodeling is written by David Johnston & Kim Master’s.
http://greenbuilding.com will take you to their site. They have a 101 page and some good resource links. As for the book they offer the basics on good remodel materials and give information on every part of the house. So if your going to do a remodel its worth checking out.

Greenroofs.com

I always liked earth covered roof architecture. If its done right , the building blends into the landscape. The first settlers in on the Nebraska prairie lived in houses with sod roofs. When I look at those old photos I can’t help thinking that must of been a real mess in the spring. On a modern commercial level here in Seattle the greenroof is very popular. Seattle’s city hall has a green roof. In all of these modern applications we still have a controlled mess along with medium to high maintenance. I believe it is worth the extra trouble and I encourage you to experiment with this or think about it adding some green area into your future design plans. Check out www.GreenRoofs.com Over the last twenty years there have been a lot the technical advancements in these systems. GreenRoofs has a great 101 page along with resources to material suppliers and what to plant in this type of environment.

If your doing a roof top project the Seattle area I would like to check it out and post some photos on this blog.
